The Vampire Opera
L'idolo Vendicato
The Avenged Idol
Libretto by Jasmine Aliara
Music by Andrew DiGelsomina
Characters:
Miradette: 16 year old is stricken with poverty. She loves romance, morbidity and glamour. She wants to be a vampire.
Fabien: 21 year old vampire is of French descent, can speak several languages and plays the violin. He has dark hair and dark eyes. There is usually a shadow about him.
Isabelle: 22 year old vamp is known for being a sex goddess of sorts. She is a flirty and voluptuous blonde (mer-material) who is stuck-up and demanding.
Drizzella: 15 year old vamp is Fabien's conniving sister. She is known for always taking sides with Isabelle. She is obsessed with fancy dresses.
Gustavio: 38 year old vampire is a comic relief. To those without a sense of humor, he's an annoyance. He is charming and polite but unattainable. He is not "down to earth".
Time Period:
Act I starts in the year 1760 when Mozart wrote his first concerto. The opera ends in the year of Mozart's death (1791). The vampires share one thing in common beside their lust for blood and immortality: they are huge fans of Mozart! They would always hide in the corners of Mozart's performances and were completely devastated when Mozart passed away. This will lead to interesting changes in behaviour and direction amongst the characters to perhaps an ironic ending.
Setting:
The vampires travel as often as Mozart travels. They are lured to his music and cannot seem to break away. They love and respect Mozart so much that they follow him everywhere! Miradette comes into the opera when Mozart and the vampires arrive in Vienna.
General Story and Plot:
Isabelle, Drizzella and Fabien desire to move up in rank within the vampire society. Gustavio couldn't care less - he's happy with their current situation which is sleeping in crypts and occasionally feasting on fresh corpses when there aren't any live prey around. Moving up in rank means that fresh blood will always be available, they'll be able to live in one of the luxurious mansions with other respected vampire leaders and of course they would then have more of everything in general including access to extravagance and high-class parties. The opera then changes the set to a mansion and plays out how each character would act if they had that chance...each character gets their own aria. Drizzella dons a fancy dress and dances to exquisite music while singing about the pleasures of ribbons, lace, silk, her plush coffin and so forth - she'd keep all of the candles lit at all times. Isabelle's dream is of seducing finer men - she sings about how easily the men would be tempted by her - she imagines leading them from the bright ballroom to her dark bedroom. Fabien sings about how he would no longer be on the street - he'd keep the mansion dark and remain in morbid solitude with his violin. Then the set changes to a graveyard. Gustavio arias about how he would be content with simply a nice vamp to roll around in the crypts with. Finally it's time for Miradette's aria. She sings about how, if she were a vampire, she'd do all of these things and more! She sings her aria in the same graveyard (unbeknownst to Gustavio) and soon meets Fabien there for the first time.
Isabelle has always been attracted to Fabien but she has never made it clear enough. Isabelle has always questioned whether or not they were meant to be a couple - a part of her really wants to make him hers but she acts mostly defensive around Fabien due to her frivolous desires. Isabelle and Drizzella are very close, like sisters. When Isabelle finds out that Miradette has attracted Fabien's attention, Isabelle becomes insanely jealous. Therefore, Isabelle begins to find "reasons" that Drizzella and she should dislike Miradette. There is obviously the possibility of discord between Fabien and the ladies now.
Fabien is forced to choose between the possibility of true and immortal love with Miradette and the wrath of Isabelle or moving up in rank in the vampire society (keeping Isabelle happy would give him a better chance of accomplishing this).
The rest is a secret - you will be utterly shocked at the ending of this opera and I won't ruin the surprise!
